Heading into the 2019 NFL season, it was unclear what role veteran running back Adrian Peterson would play in the Washington Redskins' offense.

Despite any hang-ups, though, it was nearly impossible to keep the 34-year-old rusher out of the history books. A second-quarter touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday moved Peterson into fifth place on the all-time career rushing scores list.

Peterson, in his second season with the Redskins, passed Hall of Fame rusher Jim Brown with the goal line advance into the end zone, which opened the scoreless game with an early lead for the D.C. franchise against their NFC East division rival.

Peterson's 107th career rushing touchdown puts him behind Emmitt Smith, LaDainian Tomlinson, Marcus Allen, and Walter Payton in history.

The longtime Minnesota Vikings running back was a healthy scratch for the Redskins Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles, which saw starting rusher Derrius Guice go down with a knee injury.

Peterson appeared in 16 games for Washington during the 2018 season, rushing for 1,042 yards and seven touchdowns. Prior to his tenure in the nation's capital, Peterson spent the 2017 season split between the Arizona Cardinals and New Orleans Saints.

Peterson was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2007 NFL Draft by the Vikings, where he spent a decade with the Twin Cities franchise. A seven-time Pro-Bowl running back, Peterson's career peaked in 2012 when he won both the NFL's MVP award and offensive player of the year.
