Washington Redskins veteran running back Adrian Peterson continues to make history during the 2019 NFL season as he amasses new records. On Sunday in his team's Week 15 matchup with NFC East division rival Philadelphia Eagles, the 34-year-old surpassed Hall of Famer Curtis Martin for fifth-most career rushing yards in league history, per NFL Research.

The seven-time Pro-Bowler's feat came soon after he tied Walter Payton, another Hall of Fame rusher, for fourth-most rushing touchdowns, making today's tilt extra special for Peterson as he slowly climbs up the league's records.

Peterson initially joined the Redskins in 2018, appearing in 16 games for the D.C. franchise and tallying 1,042 rushing yards on 251 carries for seven touchdowns. Expecting his workload to dramatically decrease the following season after the arrival of second-round pick Derrius Guice, who had torn his ACL in preseason in his rookie season, Guice ultimately was injured again in 2019, making the one-time regular season MVP Peterson step up for more carries.

Entering Sunday's matchup with the Eagles, Peterson has 718 yards on the ground on 167 carries for three touchdowns. Peterson could get the bulk of the carries after Guice, who returned in Week 11 against the New York Jets, sprained his MCL last week.

Peterson, commenting on his teammate's injury, said it could have been “worse.”

“I know what he’s been through,” Peterson said, via The Athletic. “That’s the last thing he needs is another serious injury, so like I told him, take the positives away. I know you wanted to be out there to play and help finish the game, but it could’ve been worse than what it was.”

It's unclear if Peterson will retire at the end of the season or continue chasing history in a potential 14th season.
