In the early goings of the week, there has been plenty of scrutiny on the health of former All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson as he hasn't been on practicing due to an ankle injury that put some question marks on his availability for Monday's game against the New Orleans Saints.

Peterson has taken a step forward toward playing in that contest as he returned to practice for the first time this week on Thursday, according to John Keim of ESPN.

It is an encouraging sign for the Redskins as Peterson has been dealing with an ankle injury over the last week that occurred late in the 31-17 win over the Green Bay Packers in Week 3. He was able to get some rest during the Week 4 bye, but he was still off the practice field through the first few days of the week. His participation on Thursday should bode well for his chances to play as he will have the next two days to get practices under his belt in order to prove he is ready to go.

Peterson has been a major offensive factor for the Redskins this season through the first three games played with 236 rushing yards and three touchdowns along with five catches for 100 receiving yards. This includes coming off a season-high 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the 31-17 win over the Green Bay Packers in Week 3. He is currently projected to record 1,259 rushing yards and 16 touchdowns at the pace that he has begun the 2018 campaign.

The Redskins have an intriguing matchup on the road in Week 5 that could once again see Peterson be a big part of the game plan. New Orleans has been stout against the run this season giving up the fourth-fewest yards while being first with a league-low 3.2 yards per attempt allowed. All of this could set up a crucial performance in the running game for Peterson.
