After suffering a devastating leg injury last year, Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith said the goal is to play football again.

In his first interview since the broken leg that has put the rest of his career in jeopardy, Smith told Angie Goff of FOX5 DC, on The Oh My Goff Show, that the plan is to get back on the field at some point, but he still has a long way to go.

“That's the plan,” Smith said. “That's the plan. Steps. I've got to conquer some more steps before I get there. Learn to run again. That's a big one. I'm already throwing. I already feel like throwing is not a problem. I feel like I can throw. But dropping, moving around, all that kind of stuff, change of direction.”

Smith said that he has been able to play golf and playing basketball with the kids. Right now, he is trying to get his lifestyle back to normal. Smith is still wearing an external fixator that he will continue to have for another four or six weeks.

As annoying as the fixator has to be, Smith knows it has helped save his leg, so he isn't too frustrated having to still wear it.

“Believe it or not, this thing is going to save my leg, save my bone, allow me to heal and walk again and hopefully play football again,” he said.

Playing football at this point would be a bonus, and it's good to hear that he should be able to continue to live a normal life.
