Alex Smith is attempting to make a miraculous comeback to the NFL. He appears to be making progress with the Washington Football Team, formerly known as the Redskins. According to a source who spoke to JP Finlay of NBC Sports, Smith ‘looked good' during on-field workouts.

“Speaking with sources close to the Washington Football Team, (Alex) Smith participated in four consecutive days of on-field workouts with trainers and performed well. Perhaps more importantly, Smith suffered no setbacks after the on-field work.”

Of course, Alex Smith is still recovering from a devastating leg injury that he suffered in 2018. Seeing that he fractured his tibia and fibula, Smith needs to show that he can move around on a football field again.

Near the end of last month, Alex Smith was medically cleared to return to football by his surgical team. Even though he passed the medical physical, Ron Rivera wants the veteran quarterback to pass the team's on-field test.

“We got a bit of good news that he passed the physical. As far as his doctors were concerned, he could resume football activity, and now, he’s got to pass the football physical for us,” Rivera said. “And if that happens, again, I think this is a guy that becomes part of our equation.”

Ken Zampese, Washington's quarterbacks coach, believes the organization will have a better gauge of where Alex Smith is once he participates in 11-on-11 drills.

“We will be able to see through some of the drill work, how quickly he can move out of the way and slide and play. In 11-on-11 when there is no contact, guys that come through on the rush, how they move in the pocket,” Zampese said. “How you can accelerate away from a rusher. Those are the things that we will use to determine the next steps.”

When Alex Smith underwent surgery on his leg, the prospects of him playing in the NFL again were bleak. But with Smith flashing progress on the field, he is one step closer to defying the odds with Washington.
