Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith has finally been released from the hospital after multiple surgeries on his broken leg, which then became infected, Adam Schefter and John Keim of ESPN report.

Apart from that good news, there’s also some optimism that Smith will be able to continue his NFL career following his horrific leg break.

Smith broke his right leg in the third quarter of Washington's 23-21 home loss to the Houston Texans on Nov. 18. He was quickly brought to a local hospital to undergo surgery to repair his tibia and fibula.

It’s obviously great news that Smith is finally out of the hospital following a concerning ordeal. However, he still faces a long road back following his horrific leg break.

Smith just signed a four-year, $94 million contract with the Redskins after he was acquired in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. He would take up $20.4 million of their salary cap next season and $21.4 million in 2020. That would be an enormous amount of dead cap if Smith were unable to play again.

Because of the Smith injury, the Redskins will likely have to acquire another quarterback for next season. Colt McCoy, who broke his leg earlier this month, might return next season. However, Mark Sanchez and current starter Josh Johnson are not attractive long-term options.

Given their current cap situation, the Redskins’ most realistic avenue for landing a quarterback will likely be in the draft. And if it turns out Smith can’t continue his career, that young QB might be tasked with taking over for the long-term in Washington.
