Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith will miss the entire 2019 season after suffering a horrific leg break last year. There's even some doubt as to whether he'll be able to continue his career.

But the 35-year-old tells Yahoo Sports' Terez Paylor that he intends to do whatever he can to get back onto the field.

“I’m still determined [to play], still marching down the road, still optimistic,” Smith told Yahoo Sports. “I want to push it, for the challenge’s sake. I want to see what I’ve got … I enjoy the challenge, even to this [recovery], coming out here and being with the guys. It’s not going to last forever. I’d like to see where it leads.”

Smith was in the first year of his four-year, $94 million deal with the Redskins before he suffered his devastating injury in Week 11 against the Houston Texans.

In 10 games, he went 6-4, completing 62.5 percent of his passes for 2,180 yards with 10 touchdowns and five interceptions.

Despite his injury, Smith is doing what he can to contribute to the team. He has been closely working with quarterbacks Case Keenum, Colt McCoy, and rookie Dwayne Haskins during training camp, helping them from the sidelines.

There's a decent chance Smith might not be able to play again; he suffered the same injury which famously ended Joe Theismann's career. Coming back from such a serious injury won't be easy, especially since he's now in his mid-30s.

But Smith seems determined to do whatever it takes to come back and play quarterback in the NFL again. Whether he succeeds or not remains to be seen.
