The Washington Redskins managed to shore up some serious depth under center this offseason. Meanwhile, quarterback Alex Smith still appears to be in the early stages of his recovery.

Head coach Jay Gruden recently gave an encouraging update on Smith's health, but according to Charean Williams of ProFootballTalk, the quarterback will still need to wear his external fixator for another month. The external fixator holds the broken bones in place.

Smith suffered a devastating leg injury during the 2018 NFL season. He has since been seen sporting the rather elaborate recovery device. There has been no indication of a timetable for his return, and many have questioned whether or not he will even be able to at all. The 35-year-old had been in the midst of a major transition to Washington when the injury occurred. The team has since made sure to bring in some potential contingency plans.

The Redskins were able to take quarterback Dwayne Haskins in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. While the rookie has managed to turn heads thus far, Washington indicated it will take a patient approach with his development.

The Redskins also traded for former Denver Broncos quarterback Case Keenum. It seems they are hoping Keenum can serve as a viable option under center while Haskins continues to progress and Smith continues his recovery.
