Washington Redskins quarterback Case Keenum is second on the team's depth chart at his position, behind Colt McCoy. Rookie QB Dwayne Haskins is behind Keenum. Veteran Alex Smith is recovering from a leg fracture. He is on the physically unable to perform list in training camp.

This comes as a surprise to Case Keenum, 31, however. The University of Houston product last played for the Denver Broncos in the 2018 NFL season, appearing in every game for the AFC West franchise.

Here's what Keenum had to say about his role as backup QB in training camp (via Charean Williams in NBC Sports' ProFootballTalk):

“I didn’t know,” Keenum said. “It’s news to me. Whatever reps I’m getting, I’m getting ready to play. That’s hands-down what I’m doing. [The depth chart] is for you guys to talk about. I’m not going to change what I do and how I approach each day.”

“I don’t want to peak right now,” Keenum said. “I don’t want to peak as an offense right now. We’re still putting stuff in. It’s still the first time I’ve run some plays. We’re now getting to the point where there are staples to our offense. But you still want to be building. You still want to be climbing the mountain.”

Alex Smith, 35, broke his right leg's tibia and fibula in a Week 11 game last year after being traded to Washington from the Kansas City Chiefs in January of 2018. While the three-time Pro Bowler and former first selection is on the PUP, 32-year-old Colt McCoy, who has been with the Redskins since 2014, is reportedly the number one option in Smith's stead. The Redskins traded for Keenum prior to the 2019 draft and selected Haskins with the 15th overall pick.
