The Washington Redskins have found a new backup quarterback in the form of Mark Sanchez after losing Alex Smith for the rest of the season due to a gruesome leg injury the veteran suffered during Sunday’s loss to the Houston Texans. Smith’s injury has also sparked another wave of speculation about a possible return to the NFL by controversial free-agent signal-caller Colin Kaepernick.

But with the Redskins signing Sanchez, the team has virtually shot down the possibility of Kaepernick suiting up for Washington – at least for now. For future Hall of Famer Charles Woodson, though, he believes Kaepernick should have been at least in the conversation when the Redskins were still in the process of finding a backup for Colt McCoy, via TMZ Sports.

“I don't think he will be picked up but he definitely should be in the conversation,” Woodson tells TMZ Sports.

“There's a lot of guys that are in the conversation to be picked up. We know the reason [Kaepernick is] not one of those guys … but he should be.”

Among the quarterbacks considered by the Redskins prior to signing Sanchez were EJ Manuel, Kellen Clemens, T.J. Yates, and Josh Johnson.

Kaepernick hasn’t played in the NFL since the 2016 season. It’s not a secret that a big reason why Kaepernick hasn’t landed on an NFL roster for almost two years now is his activism against racial injustice, which he showed, in part, by kneeling during the national anthem.

As for the Redskins, they will now look to rebound from their 23-21 defeat at the hands of the Texans when they take on the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington this Thursday with McCoy as their starter and Sanchez as his backup.
