Chase Young was widely regarded as the most talented player in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, while the Washington Redskins rookie will look to unleash that talent on the rest of the league, veteran linebacker Thomas Davis is stressing the basics.

The 37-year-old Davis said a deep understanding of the playbook is the most beneficial thing for any rookie, including phenoms like Young.

Davis was asked about his advice for Washington's young players during the Redskins Offseason Update Live show, stressing the X's and O's (via Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington):

“When it comes to being able to pour back into the younger guys on the team, it's all about pressing upon them the importance of understanding you have to know your playbook,” Davis said. “First and foremost, to be able to go out there and play fast and compete at a high level, you have to understand what you're doing when you're on the field.”

Davis signed a one-year deal with the Redskins in March, reuniting with former Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera.

The three-time All-Pro is one of the best linebackers of this generation, and has routinely been hailed as one of the best leaders in football.

Young and the rest of the Redskins defense will be looking to apply Davis' knowledge on the field.

Washington has a deep and talented group in the front seven, with Young joining the likes of Ryan Kerrigan, Montez Sweat and Matthew Ioannidis.

While much of the Redskins' improvement will likely be tied to the development of quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Washington will hope a dominant defense results in more wins in 2020.
