The Washington Redskins have added a few moving parts to their offense this offseason. However, head coach Jay Gruden has made it clear that he will be relying heavily on some of the longer tenured players such as running back Chris Thompson and tight end Jordan Reed.

Both players have spent the majority of their offseason working their way back from lingering injuries. Fortunately, head coach Jay Gruden is confident they will be ready for the start of the 2018 NFL season, according to ESPN's John Keim:

Gruden said Chris Thompson has looked “really good”. Gruden said Jordan Reed is on pace to be ready for the opener.

The update from Gruden is just what fans in Washington needed. When healthy, Thompson and Reed are some of the most versatile players at their positions. They will be instrumental in helping quarterback Alex Smith get situated.

The backfield took a tremendous hit with rookie running back Derrius Guice out for the season. However, Guice's status was never going to have an impact on Thompson's role in passing situations. He has firmly established himself as one of the best receiving backs in the league and will likely be heavily utilized by Smith out the gate.

Meanwhile, Reed was largely an enigma during the 2017 campaign. His laundry list of injuries forced him to endure the worst year of his career. Still, his rare combination of size and speed make him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. That said, Reed has the potential to be one of the best receiving tight ends in the league if he can manage to stay healthy.
