Controversy has surrounded the Washington Redskins for a very long time when it comes to the subject of their name.
Admittedly, the argument surrounding the name “Redskins” died down a little bit in recent years. Yes, there were still plenty of objectors. It was far from the headlines news it was in the past though.
However with everything that has been going on in the United States and across the world lately, this controversy has been thrown right back into the fire.
And now the Mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, has weighed in on the situation.
According to NBC Sports Washington, Mayor Bowser believes that the Redskins need to change their name.
“I think it’s past time for the team to deal with [a name that] offends so many people,” she said on the Doc & Galdi show on The Team 980. “And this is a great franchise with a great history that’s beloved in history and it deserves a name that reflects the affection that we feel for the team.”
The Mayor talks about the great history of the Washington franchise. She then says she feels it deserves a name that “reflects the affection” that people feel for the team.
And there is a pretty obvious reason why a lot of people may not feel affection towards a team named the “Redskins”.
Mayor Bowser also talks about the challenges the name creates for the Redskins when talking about a stadium change. Washington has been talking about a stadium relocation for a while. This is something nearly every fan believes needs to happen as the current FedEx field is considered one of the worst in the NFL.
“Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser told a local radio show on Friday that she thinks it’s time for the Redskins to change their name – and that the current name is a large obstacle to getting the team a stadium in the District.
“It’s an obstacle for us locally but it’s also an obstacle for the federal government who leases the land to us,” she said.”
This could actually become a major talking point in the argument. If changing the name helps Washington get the new stadium that they have desperately needed for quite some time now, maybe they finally make the move.
It is a possibility that the Redskins will change their name. Mayor Bowser brings up some points that need to be considered.
