The wait to see Washington Redskins running back Derrius Guice will continue. As reported by ESPN's John Keim, Washington head coach Jay Gruden will sit Guice on Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Keim says he is “still not cleared for contact. [But] has been making some good cuts in practice lately; building confidence in that knee.”
NBCSportsWashington.com's J.P. Finlay notes that “once trainers and doctors give full clearance for Derrius Guice he will be on the field. That hasn’t happened yet,” said Gruden.
The first thing and foremost is when the trainers and doctors say he can go full contact, he'll go,” Gruden said, per NBCSportsWashington.com. “Once I get that OK, we will make that decision.”
Though, “He looks good out there now,” Gruden said this week. “He's running around, cutting, and running fast, catching the ball, pass protecting.”
Guice continues to recover from a torn ACL suffered in the 2018 preseason.
The Redskins selected Guice with the No. 59 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. A former Louisiana State Tiger, Guice put up big numbers in his final two seasons in college. In 2016, the back recorded 1,387 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on an eye-popping 7.6 yards per carry. In 2017, Guice tallied 1,251 yards and 11 touchdowns on a lower, but still good, 5.3 yards per carry.
Guice made running the ball look easy in college football's most prolific conference (SEC). The Redskins are hoping he'll do the same thing at the next level. But for now, Adrian Peterson, Chris Thompson, and Samaje Perine are the running backs (Bryce Love is still recovering from a torn ACL). However, Guice should return by Week 1 of the regular season.
