President Donald Trump has chimed in on the Washington Redskins' quarterback situation.

The president made an appearance on “The Larry O'Connor Show” (via 247Sports' Jordan Dajani) on April 17. He told O'Connor he will watch a Redskins game at FedExField this season. He also emphasized football relies heavily on great quarterback play.

“I know you're a football fan. You going to go to a Redskins game at all?' O'Connor asked the president. ‘It's pretty fun out there at FedEx.”

“Well, I will,' Trump responded. ‘And actually, the owner (Daniel Snyder) is – he's really a good guy. He's been a supporter and he's done a very good job. You have a good team.”

“You've got to make sure that quarterback is gonna be healthy. Really, it's a game of quarterbacks. You see these teams that all of a sudden they hit gold when they get the right quarterback.”

“It would be nice to pick a Tom Brady in the sixth round but it doesn't happen that way, never happened that way before. But the Redskins have a very good team, they need the solidity of the quarterback. Unfortunately, they had a really good quarterback who got hurt.”

The President referred to Redskins quarterback Alex Smith, who broke his leg in the third quarter against the Houston Texans on November 18, 2018. It is doubtful Smith will take the field in the 2019 NFL season.

Smith told O'Connor on Wednesday he considers Smith an underrated quarterback.

“It's funny because he went through many seasons of football – I think he's a really underrated quarterback.

It's like they always sort of had somebody standing behind him, and he'd take (the) San Francisco (49ers) and he'd take wherever he was – he'd do really well, and they always had sort of had a backup that took over.

I think he's a very underrated guy, it's really too bad that he's not coming back because I think he's a very good quarterback.”

Without Smith in the fold, the Redskins will rely on Case Keenum as their starting quarterback in 2019. Veteran Colt McCoy should compete with Keenum for the starting spot. However, there's a good chance Keenum will get the nod from head coach Jay Gruden.

Redskins fans can only hope Keenum and McCoy exceed their expectations for the 2019 NFL season.
