Washington Football Team quarterback Dwayne Haskins struggled during his rookie season, but one of his long-time teammates has seen notable improvement in the young signal-caller.

“I’ve been around Dwayne since he’s come to Ohio State, so I’ve known him for a while and he’s going to be the first to tell you that he’s not making any excuses for last year,” Washington and ex-Buckeye wide receiver Terry McLaurin told Sports Illustrated.

“The way he’s attacked this offseason has been different than I’ve ever seen him attack football. That doesn’t mean he wasn’t working hard, it’s just a different kind of focus. He lost some really good weight, he put on some muscle. He just looks really good. Hungry.”

Dwayne Haskins, whom Washington selected with the no. 15 overall pick in 2019, threw for seven touchdowns and seven interceptions in seven starts (nine games) as a rookie, but completed just 58.6% of his passes, contributing to a 76.1 QB rating. The team went 2-5 in games Haskins started under center.

McLaurin added that Haskins's immense success at Ohio State may not have prepared him for the challenges of being a starting quarterback in the NFL, but now he sees Haskins making the adequate changes to prepare for his sophomore campaign.

“He was the Big Ten record holder of this and that,” McLaurin noted. “It was all peaches and roses and now you hit a little adversity and you gotta step back and readjust. I feel like he’s done that. This offense is going to be great for him and me.”

McLaurin had an impressive first year in the NFL, emerging—not surprisingly–as a favorite target of Haskins. The 3rd-round pick (76th overall) tallied 919 yards on 58 catches, including seven TDs.
