The Washington Redskins hit a home run in the NFL Draft back in April, as Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins fell right into their laps at No. 15 overall.

Many automatically assumed that Haskins would be the starting quarterback for the Redskins going into 2019, but with veteran Case Keenum providing Haskins with some stiff competition, that does not seem to be a foregone conclusion.

As a matter of fact, a legitimate argument can be made that Keenum is currently the favorite to win the starting job.

However, that does not mean that Washington head coach Jay Gruden is dismissing Haskins from the competition, saying that he absolutely deserves a chance to win the job:

“Oh, for sure,” said Gruden on whether or not Haskins has a chance to begin the season under center, according to John Keim of ESPN.com. “I'd be silly not to. He's put enough out there on tape to say he deserves a shot, without a doubt. I don't know quite what he can do in the NFL in this system because it's new to him, but his ability warrants the fact that, hey, let's take a peek at this big son of a b—-.”

Gruden added that Haskins is “the wild card” and went on to wax about the rookie's incredible talent:

“You see the ‘wow' plays and you're like, ‘Jesus,'” Gruden said. “When he's on, there's nobody you'd rather have than Dwayne. Really. It's pretty. He stands tall; he has a cannon, and he can quicken up his release. He's got great touch. Strong, powerful arm; strong, powerful body.

Gruden also said that Haskins can be “abnormally off” at times, which is expected for a first-year player.

The Redskins won just seven games in 2018 and have made just five playoff appearances since 1993.
