The Washington Redskins opted not to exercise wide receiver Josh Doctson's fifth-year option at the deadline last week. Regardless, that has not changed head coach Jon Gruden's expectations of him moving forward.

There is no question that this is a bit of a deciding year for Doctson. According to Rhiannon Walker of TheAthletic.com, Gruden has high hopes for him in the 2019 NFL season.

“I think Josh is an excellent player,” Gruden said. “He just hasn’t had the numbers production wise, fantasy football wise that people would seem to expect him to have. We’re all expecting big things from Josh this year. Opportunities and production, there’s a fine line there. He hasn’t had the opportunities a lot of No. 1 receivers have had in the NFL.”

Washington's decision not to pick up Doctson's fifth-year option is certainly understandable. They made quite the investment when they selected him with the No. 22 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, he has yet to provide them with much bang for their buck and it seems they are still skeptical about his future with the team.

Doctson's career got off to a rough start due to injury. Although he has managed to show plenty of flashes of promise at times, he still has yet to prove he is capable of playing at a high level on a consistent basis. Washington was able to secure their potential future franchise quarterback in Dwayne Haskins. They are hoping that Doctson is among their young crop of players that can serve as viable weapons in the passing game for him.
