The Washington Redskins injury woes under center continued on Monday night versus the Philadelphia Eagles. As a result, head coach Jay Gruden had to take precautions involving tight end Jordan Reed.

It is no secret that Washington has been plagued by injury in the 2018 NFL season. According to JP Finlay of NBC Sports, Gruden informed Reed that he was the emergency quarterback after Colt McCoy went down with a fractured fibula.

Talked with Jordan Reed. He said the coaches told him he was the emergency QB but that there weren’t any plays installed for him.

This is certainly an interesting development. It is also one that Washington is hoping they never have to resort to. Unfortunately, it may be a necessary contingency plan with the way their season has gone thus far.

The Redskins suffered a devastating blow when quarterback Alex Smith was ruled out for the rest of the year. Things have only gotten worse after backup quarterback Colt McCoy has also been sidelined with a season-ending leg injury. Washington was then forced to hand the keys over to newly-signed quarterback Mark Sanchez.

Sanchez's outing versus the Eagles went about as well as many would have expected. He completed 13-of-21 passes for 100 yards and an interception. Despite his lackluster outing, head coach Jay Gruden is likely hoping that Sanchez can stay healthy enough to keep Reed at his primary position. After all, he is arguably the most talented pass-catcher on the roster.

Washington will need as much firepower on offense as they can get regardless of which player finishes the season under center.
