The Washington Redskins have been cautious with some of their more integral players on offense this offseason. Fortunately, things are looking bright for tight end Jordan Reed and running back Chris Thompson.

Washington is set to square off against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 of the 2018 NFL season. According to J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports, head coach Jay Gruden indicates that both Reed and Thompson are good to go:

Gruden says Jordan Reed and Chris Thompson are in “great shape.” Neither player on Redskins Week 1 injury report.

Gruden added that Reed could see a heavy workload on Sunday.

Gruden says the rep count for Jordan Reed could “vary” but the coach expects 86 to play “quite a bit”

Needless to say, this is encouraging news for fans in Washington. Both players bring a much-needed dynamic to this offense. Their presence should also pay huge dividends for new quarterback Alex Smith as he gets adjusted.

When healthy, Reed is one of the top receiving tight ends in the NFL. His rare combination of size and speed make him a matchup nightmare for the defense. Unfortunately, his career has been derailed by one lingering injury after another. Such was the case last year when he finished the 2017 campaign on the injured reserve after playing in just six games. However, it appears Gruden is more confident in Reed's durability this time around if he intends to play him extensively.

Meanwhile, Thompson also ended the season on the injured reserve after fracturing his fibula, however, not before establishing himself as one of the best receivers at his position as well. His versatile skill set out of the backfield is expected to be heavily utilized by Smith this season.
