Washington Redskins wide receiver Josh Doctson has yet to live up to his status as a former first-round pick. After an injury plagued-rookie year, he put up underwhelming stats of 35 catches for 502 yards in 16 games last year.

But as Doctson told Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, he has his sights set on doing some much bigger things during his third season in the league and putting his disappointing first two years behind him.

“Every new year I’m looking to be better. I have been better,” Doctson said. “Just off the field maturing, off the field understanding how to be a NFL player. There’s just a lot that goes into this game that people overlook when they first get into the league. I lost my first year [to injury], last year I was able to play and then this year looking to do huge things.”

Doctson wasn’t the only Redskins receiver who underwhelmed last season. Terrelle Pryor also struggled with injuries as no Washington wideout recorded over 800 receiving yards.

The Redskins looked to address that need for more receiving production this offseason when they signed Paul Richardson to a big free-agent deal. But aside from that, they’ll be relying on more development from Doctson and Jamison Crowder to improve that receiving corps for new quarterback Alex Smith.

Doctson says it’s been amazing and fun working with Smith during the team’s offseason workouts. Hopefully, he and Smith can forge a strong chemistry that can help the former first-rounder finally live up to his potential this season.
