The Washington Redskins acquired Kyle Allen in a trade with the Carolina Panthers last month, and apparently, he has a legitimate shot of being the starting quarterback come Week 1.

Redskins head coach Ron Rivera, who coached Allen in Carolina, said that a condensed training camp could make Allen the favorite over Dwayne Haskins to win the job under center:

“If that was the situation, Kyle would have a leg up on the situation, most certainly,” Rivera said, according to Jenny Vrentas of Sports Illustrated. “If we were told, hey, you’ve got two weeks to go, I would feel very comfortable with Kyle because here’s a guy that knows the system, has been in the system and could handle it for us for a period of time, and we’ll see how that goes. That’s kind of the thought process behind it for us.”

The NFL has already canceled organized team activities due to COVID-19, so there does appear to be a chance that training camp will be shortened.

Of course, we won't know for quite some time about how the league will handle everything, because training camp isn't scheduled to open until late July.

However, the greater theme here is that Rivera is clearly not married to the idea of Haskins at quarterback.

Rivera said earlier this offseason that he was not committed to the Ohio State product, and the fact that he went out and acquired a signal-caller he had previously coached was obviously a rather ominous sign for Haskins.

Allen played in 13 games and made 12 starts for the Panthers in 2019, throwing for 3,322 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions.
