Washington Redskins safety Landon Collins believes new head coach Ron Rivera will have no problem establishing an early precedent with his players.

Collins said Rivera had a “stern” tone when he addressed the team on Monday as the Redskins began their virtual offseason.

Rivera also made it clear he was setting a high bar in terms expectations, which Collins feels will be good for Washington's young players (via Ethan Cadeaux of NBC Sports Washington):

“Every experience with each head coach is different,” Collins said. “It depends on the guys we have around. We have a fairly young team. A coach with a stern background coming in with a focal point of how he wants things to be run, just to get guys to grab their attention…I know he's a guy that's going to get the job done. That's why he said what he said and the way he said it.”

Rivera had an up-and-down tenure in his nine years with the Carolina Panthers.

While Rivera amassed a respectable 76-63-1 record, he also had just three winning seasons to his name. “Riverboat Ron” was fired after Week 13 of the 2019 season.

Nevertheless, the Redskins will place their trust in Rivera as they hope to take the next steps in their rebuild.

The good news for Rivera is Washington should have an excellent defense. There is plenty of talent in the front seven–headlined by rookie edge-rusher Chase Young–and the Redskins also signed Kendall Fuller to join Collins in the secondary.

Can Rivera get more out of Dwayne Haskins at quarterback? The Redskins hardly added any talent at wide receiver, and made minimal upgrades to the offensive line.

Rivera might strike a demanding tone with his team, but he will also have his hands full with an offense that ranked 30th in DVOA last year.
