Landon Collins didn't expect the Redskins to end up with quarterback Dwayne Haskins.

The former New York Giants safety told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport on his podcast he expected his old team to select the Ohio State product at No. 6 overall. Instead, the Giants took Duke's Daniel Jones.

Collins added he thought Washington stole Haskins, and that he was the best quarterback in the draft.

“Honestly, I thought the Giants were going to take him,” Collins said in a separate interview with NJ.com. “It slipped into our hands. I was like, ‘Wow, we got the best quarterback. We stole the best quarterback in the draft. Awesome.’”

Not putting the franchise tag on Collins was the first of several surprising decisions Giants general manager Dave Gettleman made this offseason. The Pro Bowl safety then quickly signed a six-year, $84 million deal with the rival Redskins in March.

The choice between Haskins and Jones is one that will be dissected for years with the quarterbacks in the same division. The Giants’ selection on Jones has been harshly criticized, particularly because they took him at No. 6 and did not wait till their second first-round pick at No. 17.

Gettleman said he knew of two teams would have taken Jones before that 17th pick. The Redskins and Broncos were the teams Gettleman reportedly feared. Haskins is expected to compete for the Redskins’ starting job, while Jones will be sitting behind Eli Manning at least at the start of his rookie season.
