Marvin Lewis could be back in the NFL. According to Alex Marvez of SiriusXM NFL Radio, Lewis is a “serious contender” to become the next head coach of the Washington Redskins. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has confirmed the report.

Marvez suggests that Lewis may have already interviewed with Redskins owner Dan Snyder for the job.

Lewis was fired from his post as Cincinnati Bengals head coach at the end of last season after a 16-year run that began in 2003, right after Lewis had served as Redskins defensive coordinator in 2002.

While Lewis never won a playoff game with the Bengals, he transformed a franchise that was the laughing stock of the NFL into a legitimate organization that made seven playoff appearances during his tenure there.

Cincinnati even made five straight postseason appearances from 2011 through 2015, winning a pair of AFC North division titles along the way.

Washington fired Jay Gruden as its head coach after an 0-5 start to this season. Since Gruden's dismissal, Bill Callahan has been serving as the club's interim head coach.

While the Redskins have played a bit better under Callahan, they have still struggled overall, going just 3-7 since Callahan took over.

Washington has been one of the NFL's least successful franchises over the last two-and-a-half decades.

Since 1993, the Redskins have made just five trips to the playoffs, winning two postseason games. Washington's last playoff appearance came in 2015, when it won a putrid NFC East division with a 9-7 record.

Gruden had been at the helm since 2014 and posted two winning seasons during his stint.
