Paul Richardson was signed in free agency by the Washington Redskins with the hope that he could become a lead wide receiver. While he showed signs of being what the team needed him to be, he was unable to become the true No. 1 target. Now, his season has come to an end prematurely.

According to a report from the Redskins' official Twitter account, Richardson will miss the remainder of the 2018 NFL season due to an AC joint injury.

While it is disappointing news, the Redskins will still have him under contract moving forward. He is going to be asked to come back in 2019 and live up to the money that the team decided to give him.

In the seven games that he played with Washington this season, Richardson caught 20 passes for 262 yards and two touchdowns. He may not have lived up to the expectations, but there are still reasons to believe that he will get things back on track next year.

Washington may decide to look elsewhere for help at wide receiver as well. Alex Smith has not had a bad season, but it has become apparent that the Redskins need to bring in more support for him. Richardson is going to be part of the solution, but a big-name receiver or dynamic rookie would be a big step in the right direction.

At just 26 years old, this injury is not going to set Richardson back too much. Missing big chunks of a season is never desired, but it certainly isn't going to hurt him in any way.

Expect to see Richardson attack his rehab process this offseason. He is going to use the disappointment of 2018 as a motivational tool to come back as an improved version of himself.
