Washington Redskins running back Adrian Peterson is regarded as one of the greatest backs of his generation. However, it appears he wishes he may have done things a bit differently.

There is no question that the running back position has become a bit expendable in recent years. According to Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post, Peterson admits he would change positions if he could:

“Yeah, definitely,” Peterson said. If he was 18 now, Peterson says, he would choose wide receiver or put on weight and become a pass rusher, “like Von Miller or something,” Peterson said.

Peterson's comments came in response to one of the most dominant high school running backs deciding to switch to linebacker in college. Many would have expected the veteran to take offense to an offensive guy switching to defense. However, it appears Peterson agrees with the decision.

“Smart guy,” Peterson said. “It’s smart. If you’re able to play a different position and be good at it and be as dominant, then me as a running back, I would definitely go that route.”

There is certainly plenty of truth to Peterson's statements. Running backs used to be glamorized as the most notable position in the NFL. Much of the league's early history was dominated by legendary running backs. Unfortunately, their value has taken a bit of a hit in recent years as the NFL transitions to a more pass-heavy approach. As a result, defensive ends and wide receivers have seen their market skyrocket while running backs are still stuck playing perhaps the most physically demanding position in the game.

It is certainly not difficult to imagine a player of Peterson's caliber being a tenacious defender. However, it is safe to say his decision to play running back has worked out quite well for him.
