The Washington Redskins are off to an encouraging start to the season through the first eight weeks of the season with a 5-3 record that has put them atop of the NFC East standings.

This has pushed former Pro Bowl running back Adrian Peterson to voice during an interview with 106.7 The Fan that not only are his hopes to secure a championship but that he believes the Redskins are a Super Bowl-caliber team.

“Winning a championship, that's number one,” Peterson told Chad Dukes on 106.7 The Fan. “That's my number one goal, winning a championship any way that I can. Everything else is pretty much bonus to me.”

Asked if the Redskins are a championship-caliber team, Peterson said, “Yeah. Definitely. I don't think we're there yet, but I know that we have all the tools and the potential to be that championship team. This second half is going to be really critical for us to mold and get things going and then start that run.”

These are certainly high expectations set forth by Peterson for his team that he strongly believes that the Redskins can compete for the Super Bowl. The team has gotten off to a solid start to the season that has them in position to get to the playoffs if they can continue to stay atop the NFC East standings.

There will be plenty of tough challenges ahead with the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, the New Orleans Saints, the Los Angeles Rams, the Carolina Panthers and the Minnesota Vikings to name a few. It should be noted that the Redskins were blown out 43-19 by the Saints back in Week 5.

This will likely require Peterson to play a huge part of the puzzle offensively as he's in the midst of a resurgent campaign currently ranked fifth in the league with 604 rushing yards, along with four touchdowns. If he can continue to play at a high level, it could help give the Redskins a better chance at competing for a Super Bowl this season.
