The Washington Redskins backfield depth has taken a hit after it’s been reported that running back Robert Kelley could be sidelined for several weeks if his toe injury needs surgery to repair, according to head coach Jay Gruden and via J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports Washington.

Kelley has fallen behind in the Redskins’ running back pecking order with the arrival of veteran Adrian Peterson. Even before Peterson’s entry to the team, however, Kelley was always going to have a reduced role after the team drafted running back Derrius Guice. Guice, of course, got injured in the preseason, which paved the way for the addition of AP.

Kelley has been used sparingly by the Redskins in their first two games of the season. In Week 1, Kelley only had seven rushing yards on three carries in a win over the Arizona Cardinals. He followed that performance up by recording just one rushing yards on a solitary carry during Sunday’s loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Kelley left the Colts game momentarily because of a toe issue but managed to return to the contest. His numbers from that outing strongly suggest that the Tulane product doesn’t have a significant role on the team, and his injury should only make it harder for him to gain increased relevancy in the Redskins’ ground attack.

If Robert Kelley gets ultimately ruled out, Peterson and Chris Thompson are both in line to receive upticks in snaps and carries.
