When Ron Rivera accepted the head coaching job for the Washington Redskins, everyone was wondering why he took it before other jobs opened up. As he prepares for his first offseason with his new team, Rivera admits that it will be difficult to succeed in Washington.

“Every time I have guys come in, I tell them: ‘It’s going to be hard. It’s not going to be easy. But I need you all. I can’t do it myself. “Just because they hired me doesn’t mean the culture changes automatically. All it means is I am going to come in and implement the things I believe in. ‘I need your help. I need you to buy in. I need you to believe in what I am trying to do.’ We have to change the perception. That’s just the way it is. If you don’t, it will stick with you.”

Ron Rivera inherits a team that hasn't had much success since winning a Super Bowl in 1991. Since Dan Snyder bought the team in 1999, the Redskins have only made the playoffs five times.

In addition, the Redskins haven't won more than 10 games in a season since 2012. Over the last two decades, Washington hasn't been a desired destination for impending free agents.

However, the arrival of Rivera has provided optimism for Redskins fans and even former players believe the future is bright with Ron Rivera at the helm. Just in the short time he's been head coach, Rivera has been saying and doing the right things. But the longtime head coach understands that changing the perception of the franchise isn't going to happen overnight.
