The Washington Redskins have finally started moving forward with their search for a new head coach, and they have an intriguing man who could lead the team back to relevance in the form of Ron Rivera.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Rivera is considered to be the leading candidate to get the post in Washington. He's expected to be interviewed on Monday, but it may well become a formality as he's the heavy favorite to get the post.

The Redskins fired Jay Gruden after losing the first six games of the season. While Bill Callahan did a much better job than his predecessor, he wasn't considered a strong-enough candidate to get the job on a full-time basis.

Rivera is a terrific choice for a head coach as he's had considerable success with the Carolina Panthers. Through his nine-year tenure with the team, he helped transform the Panthers into a legitimate playoff team. The highlight of his stint was the Panthers' Super Bowl 50 appearance, but they fell short to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos.

While his departure from Carolina was unfortunate, Rivera is more than ready to get things going with his next head coaching gig.

Via NFL.com's Michael Silver:

“I'm ready to roll, and I'm ready to make a quick decision,” said Rivera, who has attracted interest from multiple teams pondering coaching changes. “In a roundabout way, word gets to you — but nothing's for sure (until an actual offer comes). So all you can do is prepare and be ready. That's kind of what I've tried to do.”

If Rivera does get the job, it will be interesting to see how he will transform their atrocious defense in 2020.
