Amari Cooper ultimately re-signed with the Dallas Cowboys on a massive five-year, $100 million deal, but there was another team chasing him throughout the free-agent process: the Washington Redskins.

As a matter of fact, the Redskins apparently came close to landing Cooper.

Recently, Washington head coach Ron Rivera revealed just how close his team was to bringing in the wide receiver:

“We were in it, talking about a substantial amount of money,” Rivera said, according to Chip Brierre of ABC 7 News. “At the end of the day, he made a decision, and we have to respect it. He would have made a great addition.”

The Redskins are in desperate need of help in their receiving corps, so the fact that Cooper was a top target of theirs in free agency makes perfect sense.

“Amari was somebody we chased hard all the way until the end,” Rivera said, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington. “We would’ve love to have him apart of what we’re trying to do here. He would’ve been a great veteran presence.”

The combination of Cooper and Terry McLaurin certainly would have been quite the spectacle and would have provided young quarterback Dwayne Haskins with one heck of a receiving corps early in his career.

Oddly enough, Washington did not pursue any of the other big receivers, instead signing Cody Latimer.

At this point, it seems safe to say that the Redskins will take their chances in the NFL Draft later this month.

The 2020 draft class is regarded as one of the best we have seen in quite some time as far as wideouts are concerned, so perhaps Washington feels comfortable adding some pieces there.
