Washington Redskins coach Ron Rivera has revealed what it's going to take for quarterback Alex Smith to get back on the field. Everyone just assumes that Dwayne Haskins is going to have the starting job handed to him, but Rivera made it clear after he was hired that no one should count out Smith.

Rivera said for Smith to get back on the field, the first thing that needs to happen is he needs to be able to protect himself. Rivera knows Smith is doing everything in his power to get back on the field, but Rivera knows if he can't take a hit, Smith can't get back onto the field:

“The one thing that he and I talked about, more than anything else, is he’s got to be able to protect himself out on the football field before anything can happen, before we can allow him back on the field,” Rivera said via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk. “He’s doing a great job, he’s working hard. He’s carrying himself the right way. He’s doing things the way he’s supposed to and we’ll see.”

The crappy part for Smith is there is only so much he can control. Even if he does everything right, there are limitations that his body could prevent him from doing to get back under center for the Redskins.

The offseason still has at least a couple of months left, so Smith has some time to see if he will be ready for the start of the 2020 season. If he is ready, Haskins could have some competition for the starting role.
