Although there had been plenty of speculation regarding the Washington Football Team's plans under center with the new coaching regime led by Ron Rivera, all signs point to them giving Dwayne Haskins an opportunity to prove himself as the long-term starter.

Of curse, the inspiring return of quarterback Alex Smith has raised some debate about a competition brewing in training camp. With the 2020 NFL season just weeks away from starting, Rivera indicates that nothing is set in stone just yet, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk:

“It’s also not just what we’re seeing, but how he’s feeling,” Rivera said. “And that’s a conversation that we’re going to have, just to see where he is mentally and go from there. That’s one of the things we try to do too, is we also try to keep him in the loop as we’ve decided and as we’ve gone forward with him.”

Rivera indicated that he has a timeline in mind of when he will officially declare a starter. For now, he is relishing in the evaluation process.

Aside from Haskins and Smith, quarterback Kyle Allen has also made a strong bid following his arrival from the
Carolina Panthers. It is safe to say that his familiarity with Rivera during their time in Carolina has helped pay huge dividends in training camp.

The onus will ultimately fall on Haskins to show that he is the clear-cut option to being the 2020 campaign. His performance could very well dictate his status as the future franchise quarterback.
