The injury bug seems to be not done messing with the Washington Redskins backfield. According to Josh Keim of ESPN, Redskins running back Samaje Perine hurt his groin during Thursday’s practice session, forcing him to spend the rest of the day resting.

The Redskins might just be playing it safe with Perine, who’s the only running back left for the Redskins team that has already placed Chris Thompson, Rob Kelley, Byron Marshall, and Keith Marshall on the injured reserve list.

Per Charean Williams of Pro Football Talk, Washington head coach Jay Gruden downplayed Perine’s injury, but did not guarantee the running back’s availability for Sunday’s home game against the visiting Denver Broncos.

“It was a minor thing based on what I’m hearing,” coach Jay Gruden said, via quotes distributed by the team. “He still had some pretty good flexibility and movement. We just held him out.”

With plenty of hurting bodies in the Redskins backfield, Perine has become the team’s bell cow running back. The rookie out of Oklahoma, who once rushed for 427 yards back in college, leads the Redskins in rushing attempts (156) and rushing yards (547), but only has a single rushing touchdown to show so far in his first year in the NFL.

In the event in which Perine will be held out, Kapri Bibbs will most likely be handed the starting running back chores against Denver. For those unaware, Bibbs once played for the Broncos.
