The Washington Redskins have once again faced stern criticism for moving forward with their offensive team name. As a result, it appears they are finally on the cusp of making a significant change.

The team announced that they will conduct a thorough review and have internal discussions about their team name, via NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport:

The announcement comes just days after shareholders from companies such as Nike, FedEx and PepsiCo to sever ties with Washington unless they change their name, making a Washington Redskins name change more likely (maybe). It seems the pressure of the potential financial loss amid the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic was more than enough for the front office to consider making a switch.

The decision to include the military as part of head coach Ron Rivera’s statement may seem a bit perplexing. Regardless, it is likely in response to the prospect of player protests during the 2020 NFL season due to the social unrest.

Although efforts to change the team name have been made by the Native American community in the past, they never gained enough steam to make it come to fruition. However, it is safe to say that the possibility of losing such significant sponsors has forced team owner Dan Snyder to finally change his tune.

The review indicates that it will take some time to kickstart the process of officially deciding on a new nickname to go by. While the change has been considered a long time coming for many, it remains to be seen just how soon Washington manages to make the switch.
