The cornerback market continues to get thinner in free agency with Ronald Darby deciding to remain in the NFC East. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Washington Redskins are signing Darby to a one-year deal.

After beginning his career with the Buffalo Bills, Darby has spent the past three seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. In his first season with the Eagles, Darby recorded a career-high three interceptions as Philadelphia would win their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

Over the past two seasons combined, Darby has contributed 80 tackles, 23 deflections, and three interceptions. With the Eagles acquiring Darius Slay and Nickell Robey-Coleman this offseason, Darby became expendable.

Also, Darby's 2019 season was a bit of struggle, allowing 39 receptions on 62 targets. Even though he was one of the better options in Philadelphia's secondary, Darby was a liability against the pass.

On the other hand, the Redskins were in desperate need of a veteran cornerback in their secondary. While they've signed Kendall Fuller in free agency, Washington lost Josh Norman and Quinton Dunbar this offseason.

Darby hasn't started in more than 11 games since the 2016 season with the Bills. Nevertheless, he figures to be a starter for the Redskins in the 2020 season.

The one-year deal that Darby signed with the Redskins is only worth $4 million. Given that, Washington can use him as a short-term option at cornerback until they find an upgrade.

Or if Darby plays well in their defense, they could choose to re-sign him next offseason. Regardless of what happens next offseason, the Redskins are hoping that Darby can provide a boost to their secondary in 2020.
