The Washington Redskins plan to work out free agent running back Josh Ferguson as Chris Thompson is currently dealing with a ‘mild case' of turf toe that has caused his status for Week 7 to be in ‘some doubt, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Thompson underwent MRI testing on Monday to determine the severity of his foot injury. He left the Redskins' 17-16 win over the Miami Dolphins after recording 20 rushing yards. It remains to be seen if he will be available to play on Sunday against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers.

On the season, Thompson has recorded 276 receiving yards on 27 receptions and has 79 rushing yards on 23 carries. The coaching change that the Redskins underwent midway through the season by replacing Jay Gruden with interim head coach Bill Callahan.

“I’ve never in my football career had this happen so its just a huge change,” Thompson said, via NBC Sports. “It’s a big shock for everybody dealing with a new coach and Coach Callahan has his ways of how he wants to run everything, and it’s different. It takes guys some time to get used to that.”

Ferguson has limited NFL experience with his only two seasons coming with the Indianapolis Colts. He has appeared in 26 games in his career resulting in a total of 152 receiving yards on 23 receptions and 25 rushing yards on 16 carries. The Colts placed Ferguson on injured reserve last season due to a groin injury.

If the Redskins do decide to sign Ferguson, it is unknown how long he would remain on the roster. His potential time with the team would likely be short and closely tied to the status of Thompson.
