The quarterback position has been a heavy talking point for the Washington Redskins this offseason and Alex Smith is still hoping to return to the field in the future. While he continues to spend countless hours rehabbing, Smith is being prepped for a front-office role in Washington.

Following the 2017 season, the Kansas City Chiefs traded Smith to the Redskins. Of course, the plan for the Chiefs was to give the keys to the offense to Patrick Mahomes in his second season.

On the other hand, Smith became the starter for the Redskins following the departure of Kirk Cousins in free agency. But in Week 11 of the 2018 season, Smith suffered a gruesome leg injury. After taking a hit from multiple defenders, Smith was diagnosed with a compound fracture in his leg.

Due to the severity of the injury and the complications he endured, it's going to be an uphill battle for Smith to play football again. Just because his playing career could be over, that doesn't mean Smith won't have a role with the Redskins.

While sitting out the 2019 season, Smith was constantly seen sitting alongside owner Dan Snyder during games. John Keim, the ESPN reporter for the Redskins, believes those interactions are going to lead to Smith joining Washington's front office.

There's no doubt that Smith is attempting to make a miraculous comeback to the NFL, with three years remaining on his current contract. It also remains to be seen if Smith would be interested in taking a job as a consultant in the front office. With that being said, if Smith expresses interest in the idea, Snyder could keep him around with the organization.
