The Washington Redskins have already accomplished one piece of important business this offseason by trading for Alex Smith to succeed the outgoing Kirk Cousins as the team’s starting quarterback. Their next item on the agenda appears to be finding Smith a big-time receiver in free agency.

The Redskins are reportedly expected to go after Allen Robinson, who’s set to hit the open market following the Jaguars’ decision not to use the franchise tag on him. But apart from him, they also intend to pursue Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Paul Richardson among others.

Richardson, 25, is coming off a breakout year with the Seahawks last season as he finally started to make good on his potential as a former second-round pick. He caught 44 passes for 703 yards and six touchdowns, all of which were easily career-highs.

While Richardson’s ceiling is nowhere near that of Robinson’s, he’d likely be a significantly cheaper and much more attainable option than the Jags wideout. Even if he doesn’t turn into a 1,000-yard receiver, he’d still be a welcome addition to the Redskins’ receiving depth chart if he can reproduce last season’s numbers.

The Redskins simply did not get the type of production they needed from their receivers last season. With both DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon gone, the Redskins didn’t have a receiver who had at least 800 receiving yards.

Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson both had solid seasons, but neither seemed quite ready to be the team’s top two targets. Terrelle Pryor, last season’s big free-agent pickup, did not perform well in what will likely be his only season in Washington.
