There has been plenty of speculation regarding the future of Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith moving forward. As a result, the team may have to look into other potential options in the 2019 NFL Draft.

There is no question that Washington has a number of voids to fill on their roster. According to ESPN's John Keim, they very well may take a quarterback early on:

They are looking hard at quarterbacks in this draft class, but the question that can’t be answered now is which round makes the most sense. The more they learn about Smith’s future, the more this question can be answered. They could opt for a quarterback in the first round or a mid-to-late-round pick; perhaps even an undrafted one

Washington's potential draft plans are certainly understandable. Although Smith is still recovering from a devastating leg injury, the team has not given any indication that they are ready to part ways with him. After all, they made headlines with their decision to move on from quarterback Kirk Cousins when they brought the veteran over from the Kansas City Chiefs last offseason. Unfortunately, their lack of depth under center led to their lackluster finish to the 2018 campaign.

Unlike last year's draft, this one will not be as quarterback-heavy. This will make it much more difficult to find a viable option in the mid-to-late rounds. Regardless, Washington is well aware of their current situation under center and will need to address it as quickly as possible if they hope to make a run at the playoffs in the near future.
