Free agent point guard George Hill is slated to meet with the Los Angeles Lakers today, reportedly discussing a one-year deal with the team, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

This meeting comes as a shock, given how the Lakers brawn cleared the way for the No. 2 overall selection Lonzo Ball to start at the point guard position.

Hill’s signing could come as a mentorship program for Ball, along with preserving cap space for next summer — a move this front office has planned from the start in order to garner Paul George‘s services as a free agent in 2018.

The Lakers reportedly are envisioning a lineup with Hill and Ball as the starting backcourt, according to ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

Hill will be parting ways with the Utah Jazz after only one season, as the team traded for Ricky Rubio, giving a top-14 protected first-round draft pick in exchange to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The IUPUI standout is the only one remaining of the top-four list of available point guards in the free agent market, after Kyle Lowry, Jeff Teague, and Jrue Holiday each agreed to terms over the weekend.

A capable playmaker with the ability to knock down three-pointers and play better-than-average defense, Hill is one of the most underrated talents looking for a team to join this summer.

During his lone campaign in Salt Lake City, the 31-year-old had his best scoring season to date, putting up 16.9 points, 4.2 assists, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game in 2016-17. Hill shot a crisp 47.7 percent from the field, including a 40.3 percent clip from beyond the arc and 80.1 percent from the stripe.
