In a surprising last-minute move, the Atlanta Hawks have hired Golden State Warriors assistant Travis Schlenk as general manager, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical.

In a search that included the likes of former Detroit Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars, and former players-turned-TV-analysts Chauncey Billups and Brent Berry — the Hawks went with an option off the grid.

Atlanta was also looking into Portland Trail Blazers‘ GM Neil Olshey and Cleveland Cavaliers GM David Griffin as potential options.

This marks the third straight season a member of the Warriors franchise finds an impact position in a different team.

The move follows the departure of former assistant coach Alvin Gentry to coach the New Orleans Pelicans in 2015 and Luke Walton to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2016.

While the move caught the eyes of many, Schlenk has served 16 years within the Warriors organization, including his last five as a direct assistant under general-manager-then-president Bob Myers.

Schlenk has dealt with day-to-day basketball operation to all player-related issues. He possesses a well-rounded resume — having done work in the video room, some scouting, and being an assistant coach before becoming an executive in the front office.

The Hawks will get a fresh outlook to their basketball operations with the 41-year-old Schlenk, after former GM Wes Wilcox resigned and coach Mike Budenholzer relinquished control over basketball operations to focus solely on coaching the team.
