The NBA Draft Lottery will take place Tuesday night and the Los Angeles Lakers will have a lot riding on where their pick lands. If they get a top 3 overall pick (which they have a 20%% chance of doing), there is a strong chance they try to trade the pick for a young veteran.

Per ESPN’s Chad Ford:

“Multiple sources said at the combine this week that they expect the pick to be in play if it’s No. 3 — with the Lakers looking for a young veteran in return.”

Many believe that a young veteran is exactly what the young Laker core needs after losing Kobe Bryant. Many believe that the organization is targeting a package deal for Pacers‘ star Paul George. But it's uncertain how open the Pacers would be to trading their young star. There certainly seems to be little reason to draft yet another prospect after two years of high draft picks. But if the pick were to end up in the top 2, it would be hard to pass on a talent like Brandon Ingram or Ben Simmons.

Getting the top 3 pick alone will be a victory for Lakers’ fans. There’s still a 44% chance that the Lakers’ pick falls out of the top 3, in which case it goes to the 76ers via the 2012 trade with the Suns for Steve Nash. If that is the case, the Lakers then lose tremendous trade value and would most likely have to find that veteran in free agency. Fortunately for the Lakers, with Kobe gone they now have plenty of cap space to attract those free agents.

The lottery will take place Tuesday, May 17 at 8pm (EST).
