Soon after the release of guard Archie Goodwin, the New Orleans Pelicans are closing in on the signing of former Los Angeles Lakers guard Anthony Brown out of the D-League, sources tell Marc Stein of ESPN.

Brown was a highly-regarded talent in L.A. and one of the most impressive guards in the D-League.

The 6-foot-7 Stanford product has only played three games for the Erie Bayhawks, but is already averaging 29.3 points and making 4.3 three-pointers per game through the young season.

Some Lakers fans and journalists alike questioned the team cutting him out of the roster before the start of the season, as he was one of the preseason darlings for the purple and gold.

His addition will give the team a physically solid shooting guard with a tall frame that can knock down the deep ball at a proficient rate.

His rebounding could probably keep him from being able to play many minutes at small forward, but his tenacity and athleticism could be an asset to the team.

While Brown is likely a placeholder signing until the injury-riddled Tyreke Evans gets back to action, if he can stick it out after his return, New Orleans will need a reliable scorer in case Evans goes down with an injury again.

Given his injury history throughout his seven-year career, Brown likely has a fair shot.
