Respawn Entertainment, developers for games such as TitanfallApex Legends, and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, just won an Oscar. This makes them the very first video game development company to ever win at the Academy Awards.

2021 OSCARS HONOR RESPAWN'S SHORT DOCU ‘COLETTE'

Respawn's short documentary accompanying one of their games just won the Best Documentary Short Subject award in the 2021 Oscars.

Respawn's virtual reality game Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond didn't really awe the critics. However, an accompanying documentary for the game did. The film titled Colette serves as the first episode out of a 9-part documentary series. They provide background and insight behind the events that unfold in Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond. As for Colette itself, it follows Collete Marin-Catherine, now 90. Colette is one of the last surviving members of the French resistance. She returns to Germany for the first time in 74 years. She visited the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp in the film, which is where his brother was killed during the war. Anthony Giaccino directed Respawn's 24-minute short documentary.

The video game studio co-produced the film with Oculus, which The Guardian then distributed for free. You can watch the entire documentary series here, completely for free.

Of course, Respawn felt proud of this distinction. “We're over the moon about Colette‘s Best Documentary (Short Subject) #Oscars win tonight!” tweeted Respawn. Maybe more video game developers should produce films to go along with their games?
