To accommodate Kevin Durant, the Golden State Warriors had to make sacrifice this summer by giving up key pieces of their rotation. One of the biggest sacrifices they made was letting go of Andrew Bogut, who brought them toughness and a defensive identity.

The Dallas Mavericks were prepared to benefit by landing Bogut in a trade using only a conditional future second round pick.

Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle spoke to Cowlishaw and Mosley on 103.3 FM ESPN recently, expressing his feelings about the trade for the Aussie center and what it means for the Mavs:

“I think we can be a better defensive team because of Bogut, and I think we’ll be a more physical defensive team from top to bottom. And then it’s going to come down to style,” Carlisle said.

“You know, at this point in time, everything is on paper, and we’re really going to have to look closely in terms of what’s the right style of play for this team. Whether it is going to be continuing to be a real up-tempo, fast-paced type of team, or is it going to be a little more of a medium-tempo type of team? We’ll see. But I think we’re going to have the option to play different ways, which is a very important thing to have.”

The passing ability, effort, and defensive skill that Bogut brings to the table will help Dallas become more versatile. Carlisle clearly believes that they will take a leap defensively due to Bogut’s arrival.
