The Carolina Panthers are technically still in the NFC playoff race, but if Luke Kuechly is out for a significant amount of time, their chances steeply decline.

Last Thursday, the star linebacker endured a brutal concussion that caused him to become quite emotional. He was immediately placed in the NFL's concussion protocol while being carted off the field.

Kuechly had a concussion last season as well, which makes this incident even more concerning. A leg injury might've kept him out longer, but the long-term effects of concussions are much more serious.

With that in mind, the Panthers aren't rushing to pinpoint a specific return date for Luke. Here's head coach Ron Rivera‘s update, from Panthers.com's Max Henson:

Rivera says there is no timetable for Kuechly's return.

Kuechly is not the type of player that Carolina can replace. He's currently third in the NFL with 102 tackles, providing a consistent presence in the middle of a defense that has struggled immensely in the secondary.
