After finishing third in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets improved drastically by trading for Chris Paul and signing PJ Tucker during the offseason. As the Golden State Warriors are considered the best team heading into the 2017-18 NBA season, there have been discussions on who the second best team is.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey was extremely honest of his team's current standing in the league according to Kelly Iko of ESPN Houston:

It is extremely rare for a general manager to not say he/she has the best team in the league. While most believe the Warriors are the league's next dynasty if they remain relatively healthy, the Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Boston Celtics are expected to be this season's championship contenders.

While the Rockets have Paul and James Harden, it will likely take some time for them to learn how to play together and off the ball. Although there are conflicting reports leading up to training camp, Houston continues to be linked with Carmelo Anthony as he and the New York Knicks are looking to part ways.

The Rockets begin their quest to dethrone the defending champions — with or without Anthony — on Oct. 17 at Oracle Arena.
