Count a former New York Knicks executive/scout as not being surprised by what is happening to Carmelo Anthony with the Houston Rockets.
Clarence Gaines Jr., who was part of the Knicks' brass which gave Carmelo Anthony a lucrative five-year max contract with the Knicks during the summer of 2014, believes the Melo situation in Houston was something that was bound to happen.

The Rockets are reportedly leaning toward parting ways with Carmelo Anthony after just 10 games. Anthony signed a one-year deal with the Rockets in the summer after getting traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder to the Atlanta Hawks, and then reaching a buyout agreement with Atlanta. The 10-time All-Star has appeared in 10 games this season and is averaging 13.4 points and 5.4 rebounds while shooting 40.5 percent from the field and 32.8 percent from beyond the arc.
After Carmelo Anthony signed that max contract with the Knicks back in 2014, New York never made the playoffs. Anthony still averaged at least 20 points per game, but he wasn't efficient and his defense kept getting worse and worse. Melo's iso-ball was taking the team nowhere. Even today, Anthony still believes and plays like he's a No. 1 option on offense, when that is clearly not the case anymore.
Former Knicks president Phil Jackson said the ball sticks in Carmelo Anthony's hand too much. He's essentially a black hole and not a good enough shooter from deep to fit into Mike D'Antoni's system in Houston. It's looking more and more likely that Carmelo Anthony's days as a Rocket are coming to an end.
